What agentic AI actually means for operations

Cutting through the hype: what an AI “agent” actually is, and the handful of places it earns its keep.

If one more person tells me AI is going to revolutionise everything, I am going to need a cup of tea and a lie down.

So let us be specific, because “agentic AI” is fast becoming the most over-used phrase of the year. An agent is simply an AI that can take steps and use tools to finish a task, rather than just answering a question. The difference is doing versus describing.

An ordinary AI drafts an email when you ask. An agent checks the system, finds the overdue work orders, drafts the follow-ups, and queues them for someone to approve. Same language model underneath; the change is that it can reach into your tools and act.

What changes, and what does not.

What changes is that the AI can now carry a multi-step job through with far less hand-holding. What does not change is everything that makes it safe to use: it still needs your data, your rules, and a human checking the work where it matters. An agent with no guardrails is not innovation. It is a liability with good grammar.

Where it helps in operations.

The honest answer is the dull, repetitive middle of the work. Triaging incoming requests. Chasing the things that are overdue. Summarising a long thread into a decision. Routing a job to the right person. It is far less suited to judgement calls, or to anything where a wrong action is expensive and nobody is reviewing it.

An agent is only as good as the system it can reach and the limits you put on it.

Start with one workflow, keep a human in the loop, and build it on the stack you already run. That is how we approach it: less revolution, more quietly removing the work nobody should be doing by hand.

Curious where an agent could quietly help?

We will look at one workflow that eats your team’s time, and tell you honestly whether an agent is the right tool or whether something simpler will do.
